With the release of the Beatles final song, ‘Now and Then,’ the South Liverpool Surveyor has published a subjective list of one of the writers top three Beatles song before our review of their new song.

1. Strawberry Fields Forever

‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ was written by John Lennon as a memoir to his childhood.

The inspiration of the song came from Lennon’s memories of playing in the garden of a Salvation Army house named ‘Strawberry Field.’

The song was recorded for the album Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band however it’s intentions were changed towards a Lennon- McCartney songwriting partnership.

In February 1967, the songs Strawberry Fields Forever and Paul McCartney’s Penny Lane were released as a double sided single.

I resonate with this song as it makes me think of my own childhood.

The repetition of the lyrics ‘Nothing is real, and nothing to get hung about’ makes you realise and remember how simple life really is. The lyrics ‘Nothing is real’ fuels my lifelong optimism and my moto to not take life too seriously. Not only the lyrics but the plethora of instruments in Strawberry Fields Forever just feel nostalgic to those days in school in music class where you could make a tune out of anything.

2. Yesterday

The song ‘Yesterday’ was released 14th June 1965 in the album ‘Help!’

Yesterday is a melancholy acoustic guitar ballad about the breakup of a relationship.

Paul McCartney is the only member of the band in the recording and it was the first official song of theirs which relied on one the performance of a singular member.

This song reminds me of the 2019 film named ‘Yesterday’ which stars Himesh Patel as a struggling musician who blacks out and wakes up to find out no one remembers The Beatles.

As a Beatles fan and a self-proclaimed ‘filmy’ I loved the film’s depiction of The Beatles songs.

‘Yesterday’ is such a simple yet effective song with only six small verses.

As the semantics of the song is a breakup, it by nature is touching, but with the slow and steadiness of the instruments used it is a very calming song. With it having over 2,200 cover versions it remains one of the most covered songs in the history of recorded music and is up there with one of their most popular songs.

3. And I Love Her

One of my favourite’s, if not my favourite, song of theirs is ‘And I Love Her’. In particular the live version from The Beatles Revival Band from 2016. The song came out the 10th July 1964 in the album ‘A Hard Day’s Night.’

Paul McCartney described the song as:” The first ballad I impressed myself with.”

And I Love Her’s intro sounds like a song you would hear when you’re on holiday, it feels like a warm summers night, very cliché. This ode to love is a song for any mood. The 2016 live version is my personal favourite version of the song because of the clear and crisp instrumentals.
